The SMART Goal Generator works by guiding you through a series of questions that make you think through your SMART objectives, helping you refine them at every step.
"SMART" stands for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant or Realistic, Time Bound. SMART goals are formulated in such a way as to increase your likelihood of achieving them.
To accomplish a goal, you need it to be as specific as possible. After all, if you don't know how success is defined, how would you get there?
Ideally, you want the goal to state the aspects of your life or work will be different once you achieve it.
For example, don't set a goal like, "I want to get fit." This is so unspecific that you never know if you actually achieved it!
Instead, frame it as, "I will be able to run 5 kilometers in under 30 minutes, three times a week. My weight will reduce by 10 pounds, and I'll have increased my muscle tone, particularly in my arms and legs."
To know when you've hit the goal, make sure it has a clear endpoint. We can achieve this by including units of measurement.
For example, don't say, "I want to lose weight."
A much better formulation would be, "I want to lose 5 kg."
There's nothing wrong with being aspirational, but if you want to make good progress and keep yourself motivated, your steps must match your reality. You should account for all your responsibilities, time and capacity while setting your goal so that you're able to comfortably get things done. The farther you go, the more you can aim to achieve and ramp it up!
Your goal does not just need to be achievable, but also something you believe will be beneficial and relevant to your life objectives. You also need to factor in its actual value in your life, even if (or especially if) the objective is curiosity or bringing you happiness and satisfaction.
SMART goals are in harmony with each other -- they don't clash! For example, if you're recovering from a knee injury, setting a goal to learn a new intense sport may not be aligned to your life right now!
Another thing to watch out for is recycling old goals. If you didn't achieve something you set out to do last year, it's tempting to move it forward into this year's plan, but before you do that, think about whether it's still relevant to you right now! Don't keep around stale goals that don't serve who you are currently.
When deadlines are far away, or non-existent, we end up procrastinating. Time bound SMART goals help you keep your eye on the prize and prevent you from slacking off and giving up. So set your milestones and hold yourself to them, so you do not drop the ball! While setting your time bound SMART goal, do remember Hofstadter's Law: It always takes longer than you expect (even when you take into account Hofstadter's Law).
If your goal is important but hazy, making it a SMART goal will bring the whole picture into focus. A SMART goal reaffirms why the goal is important for you and what you need to do to achieve it. Moreover, it will also help you check in with yourself every now and then on whether you're actually doing everything you've set out to do, or not.
With SMART goals, you'll be able to track your every move and determine if it's taking you toward the finish line. You can also pause along the way to see whether you need to switch roads, backtrack for a bit, or keep moving forward.
When you set SMART goals, you know exactly what you have to do, you'll also be able to set aside the right time and resources you need to get there. If a step requires some additional knowledge or skills, for instance, you'll know in advance and can give yourself time to prepare for it.
As you make progress, you'll be able to boost your confidence with how far you've come and push yourself to keep going. Meeting the little milestones and celebrating them will keep you motivated on the road to a grand success!
