Boss as a service (BAAS) is incredible. Almost 5 years ago, I started the program, at a time when I was having trouble getting a single task done in a week. In general, I was making zero progress towards my life goals.
Results first: In a short few years, I made a complete career change (software to comp bio research), was promoted, completed a major publication (Nature), learned mandarin (~5000 words/comfortable speaking), self taught organic chemistry, biochemistry, and took PhD classes in biochemistry at MIT. To emphasize balance here, I tracked and wasted time binging Netflix, built routine runs, and have a great group of friends.
So how did it happen? It started slow. Agnisha, my first boss tried to convince me to respond to her nagging emails, and it usually took me a week! And I never did half of what I set out to do. So so gradually that I couldn't even observe it, she massaged the situation, tweaking our routine slowly but surely until we were exchanging daily messages (I think your boss will now message you through pretty much any chat app), goal setting, and trying to reflect and improve. All of a sudden, things started to change. Chinese leapt forward, and Ochem, and the first career shift (to software engineering for biology research). Enter Shivika. Shivika worked with me every day to develop a routine, together we got down the "brushing teeth habits" of every day: Exercise, reflection, reading, etc. Eventually, we started a routine of laying out the full schedule for every day, hour by hour. People tell me now how organized I am, how they think I'm "type A", passionate, and accomplished. And I have to laugh, because I know I'm the most easy going person, how I was terribly disorganized, etc.
A final note, since I've had 2 friends start using BAAS and have spent so much time with this service, although it's really a life lesson. Change takes time, and some ideas work, and some don't. Different people have different motivations. I've probably tried 50 different systems for organizing my schedule, my todos, and holding myself accountable at the prompting of my boss. For every 1 that works, there are 5 that didn't. So don't think that because a system doesn't work for you, it's game over. A lot of people use Beeminder, including a close friend of mine, but personally I don't get motivated by it. So, keep trying, and you will find your way.
